Herons Class (JK/Year 6)

Good afternoon Year 6,

Well done for your excellent work and performances of your wonderful poetry! I was so proud of your effort and enthusiasm :)

Coral Rumble poetry workshop with year 6

Coral Rumble, the Caterpillar Poetry Prize winner in 2018, worked with year 6, class JK all day writing poetry in a creative and fun way. Coral started the day by performing some of her favourite poems to them. She linked poets to comedians, as they have a similar purpose- to entertain and perform. They used similes and personification to create their very own poems. Throughout the day they got the opportunity to perform their poetry to the class. They had lots of fun with words, describing objects in the class and building in emotion to their poems. They had a great day!

Three children from year 6 have been chosen to perform Julia Donaldson’s ‘The Christmas Pine.’ They will be filmed performing this next week.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Wakley

There are some ideas of materials you could use on the template on the next page. Also, please see attached the knowledge organiser of concepts the children will cover and need to know for our science topic.

Some ideas of what you could try:

  • What happens to bread when you put it in the toaster?
  • What happens to an egg when you cook it?
  • What happens to water when it is boiled?
  • Can these changes be reversed?
  • Make sure you have permission from your adult to do this. Don’t forget to take some photographs of you investigating. Get creative and have fun! (Please see the attached sheet for more information about your research project.)

Have a lovely and restful half-term!

Weekend Homework- 16.10.2020

Creating tension in the build-up of The Star Bearer.

Good afternoon Year 6,

Below is the build-up in the myth we have been learning about in English. Your task is to try and build tension by including the suspenseful techniques that we learnt about this week (please see the checklist on the page attached to this message) You are expected to write at least half a page of work.

Example of how to build tension using what you can hear:

The world was completely still. Nothing moved, not a leaf quivered, but over the silence brooded a ghostly calm and the whisper of his smoking breath as it rose in gasps and lingered in the frosty air.

Have a lovely weekend!

Weekend Homework- 09.10.2020

Due date: Monday 12th October 2020

Good afternoon year 6,

Black History Month

Next week we will be celebrating Black History Month at school. We have been very interested in the history of the slave trade in Britain, and have been having lots of discussions in class. Complete the reading comprehension - 'The Transatlantic Slave Trade'. We will mark it together next week. Miss Wakley has given you a copy to take home. It can also be found attached below.

Also, remember you can participate in our Black History Month competition. Find out more in the document below!

Mental Health Awareness Day

On Thursday, Mrs Waine led an assembly based on Mental Health Day. We looked at all the ways we can look after our mental health. Mrs Waine would like children to think of different things they could do to help them feel calm and ready to learn. You could send a picture to office@stmaryangels.co.uk of your child's activities. This could be them reading, going for a walk or playing a board game.

Returning reading books

Books can be changed every Monday and must be returned on Thursday so that they can be 'quarantined' in a separate box for three days. Children's reading records should be signed daily to show they have read at home. Remember, 15-20 minutes a day can make a BIG difference to children's confidence in reading. Children can choose which book they want to read according to their reading level.

Weekend Homework- 25.09.2020

HOMEWORK DUE: Monday 28th September 2020em

Good afternoon Year 6,

Another busy week has rushed by! I hope you enjoyed video calling my brother who is a Geography teacher living in Egypt. He taught us some interesting facts and we got to see what Egypt looked like.

This weekend we will be giving you two tasks to complete.

1. Your first task will be to learn a poem (or part of a poem- attached to this message) in preparation for National Poetry Day on Thursday 1st October 2020, where you will perform your recitals for all the other classes to watch via Zoom. Your parents have been sent home this information and we have attached the letter to this message for your convenience. Don't forget to visit the Scholastic website and order some books for yourself, using the link recommended- http://schools.scholastic.co.uk/st-mary-of-the-angels-rc

2. Your second task is to complete a Reading Comprehension attached to this message all about Tutankhamun- the fascinating 'boy King'. It has been differentiated three ways, so either choose your level of difficulty- mild, spicy or hot OR speak to Miss Wakley to find out which one would be suitable for you. Make sure to read each question twice and spend at least 30 minutes completing the activity. The answers are attached to the document so you can self-mark or mark with your parent or carer. Remember: if you find it tricky, speak to Miss Wakley about it on Monday :)

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Wakley

Extra challenge: Write your own poem inspired by the theme Vision and learn it for next week.ber 202

Science Homework - 18.09.20

Due Date: Monday 21st September 2020

The Peppered Moth

Our Science unit of study this term is ‘Evolution and inheritance.’ The evolution of the peppered moth has been studied in detail over the last 150 years. At first, almost all of the moths were light coloured, however overtime the population of moths became darker in colouring.

We want you to investigate why these changes happened. Please use the questions on the sheet below to guide you in your research.

You can present your information as an information leaflet, a word document or complete it in your homework book. You will need to use the internet to help you find the information. You may want to add some pictures to your work. Please try and complete your work independently. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to bring your work in to be marked.
