Children's Mental Health Week

Miss Wakley here (I am working from home this week, doing the online learning)- a message for you....

Just a post to see how very proud we all are of you. You are doing such a fabulous job.

We hope everyone is making sure to take good care of their mental health, we know it is equally as important as our physical health. As we know it is Children's Mental Health Week, so do make sure you are taking a break and doing something fun when you need to. I have been enjoying doing some relaxation with you in the mornings. I have done some baking, (I made some rocky road), reading and am making sure I go outside for a walk or a run to get some fresh air and take some time away from the screen.

Don't forget on Friday it is dress to express yourself day. Wear some fun colours to show what makes you, you!

This includes ALL your learning for the week, as well as the times of your LIVE Google Classroom lessons and check-ins with me. We have also included a helpful reminder sheet for how to join the live Google Classroom lessons with your teacher.

Everyday you will be expected to join a meeting with me from 9.20-9.30 to discuss the days work, from 10.30-11.30 where I will lead a live book talk session and from 3.15-3.30 to discuss any problems or issues with the work. I know some of you didn't attend the live lesson last week. You don't need a code or anything, you just need to click on the meet link at the top of the page that I will make visible at the correct time. Every meeting there will be a register taken and it will tell me who is there. I will be ringing up and contacting those who don't make it. These sessions are COMPULSORY. If you have technical issues with joining, then just let me know. Also, I will be keeping an eye on who is uploading work and who isn't.

We have also attached your worksheets for today. Don't forget to do your Maths and English on Google Classroom and hand in for us to mark.

We look forward to seeing you multiple times a day to check in on how you are getting on with your learning.

Our new topic: MISSION

Each of us has a mission from God and we must find a way to complete this mission.

Realising we have an important mission and a calling from God can be a scary thought because it is a big responsibility but God has given each of us a very special job to do and God knows that we are the right person for that mission.

Although we all have the same mission to love others there may be different ways that we live out this mission. God calls each of us for our own special role.

Your Task:

1. Complete the 'mission topic page' (word document attached below). Have a go writing a definition for each word, and answer the 'Big Question' in the box.

2. Watch this clip about God's mission for us: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGqL4TL3MzU&feature=youtu.be

Answer these questions:

Have you heard God’s call?

Will you answer God’s call when you hear it?

What change would you like to see in the world?

What could you do to change the world?

Book Talk

This is the story of a house which escapes from its suburban foundations and sets off on an epic journey. Home Sweet Home combines elements of road-trip, apocalyptic and friendship narratives in it's story of a couple houses travelling across America. Can you link it to anything you have seen or read before?

While you watch the video below, follow the comprehension questions. You will need to be pausing throughout so make sure you have the questions and times for pausing with you, this is important.

The questions and the video are attached below.

Happy New Year!   04.01.21

Good Morning Year 5!

I hope you had a lovely Christmas and New Year, and a well-earned rest. Unfortunately, we won't be seeing one another for the next couple of weeks. However, I will be keeping in touch with you every day and uploading some exciting work for you to complete. Please send in any work you do, I always love to see your hard work. Also, if you have any questions or want to let me know how you are getting on, you can use J2e, send an email which will be forwarded onto me or Google Classroom (I may put a question or two up there so check it out).

It is very important that you do as much of this work as you can. I know things will be a little different and trickier than normal but at times like this we need to help each other as much as possible. You will need to be patient with your parents and siblings as I know some of you may not have access to the online learning.

Make sure you are reading a good book each day, have a rest between each subject and make sure to smile through everything you are achieving. You are going to be great.

Stay positive!

Miss O'Brien :)

Weekend Homework- 16.10.2020

Homework due: Monday 19th October 2020

Creating tension in the build-up of The Star Bearer.

Good afternoon Year 5,

Below is the build-up in the myth we have been learning about in English. Your task is to try and build tension by including the suspenseful techniques that we learnt about this week (please see the checklist on the page attached to this message) You are expected to write at least half a page of work.

Example of how to build tension using what you can hear:

The world was completely still. Nothing moved, not a leaf quivered, but over the silence brooded a ghostly calm and the whisper of his smoking breath as it rose in gasps and lingered in the frosty air.

Have a lovely weekend!

Miss O'Brien

Weekend Homework - 09.10.20

Due Date: Monday 12th October 2020

Good afternoon year 5,

Black History Month

Next week we will be celebrating Black History Month at school. We will be learning about the history of the slave trade in Britain. Complete the reading comprehension - 'The Transatlantic Slave Trade'. We will mark it together next week. Everyone was given a copy to take home. It can also be found attached below.

Also, remember you can participate in our Black History Month competition. Find out more in the document below!

Mental Health Awareness Day

On Thursday, Mrs Waine led an assembly based on Mental Health Day. We looked at all the ways we can look after our mental health. Mrs Waine would like children to think of different things they could do to help them feel calm and ready to learn. You could send a picture to office@stmaryangels.co.uk of your child's activities. This could be them reading, going for a walk or playing a board game.

Returning reading books

Books can be changed every Monday and must be returned on Thursday so that they can be 'quarantined' in a seperate box for three days. Children's reading records should be signed daily to show they have read at home. Remember, 15 minutes a day can make a BIG difference to children's confidence in reading. Children can choose which book they want to read according to their reading level.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss O'Brien

Science Homework - 18.09.20

Due Date: Monday 21st September 2020

The Peppered Moth

Our Science unit of study this term is ‘Evolution and inheritance.’ The evolution of the peppered moth has been studied in detail over the last 150 years. At first, almost all of the moths were light coloured, however overtime the population of moths became darker in colouring.

We want you to investigate why these changes happened. Please use the questions on the sheet below to guide you in your research.

You can present your information as an information leaflet, a word document or complete it in your homework book. You will need to use the internet to help you find the information. You may want to add some pictures to your work. Please try and complete your work independently. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to bring your work in to be marked.
