Children's Mental Health Week

Miss Wakley here (I am working from home this week, doing the online learning)- a message for you....

Just a post to see how very proud we all are of you. You are doing such a fabulous job.

We hope everyone is making sure to take good care of their mental health, we know it is equally as important as our physical health. As we know it is Children's Mental Health Week, so do make sure you are taking a break and doing something fun when you need to. I have been enjoying doing some relaxation with you in the mornings. I have done some baking, (I made some rocky road), reading and am making sure I go outside for a walk or a run to get some fresh air and take some time away from the screen.

Don't forget on Friday it is dress to express yourself day. Wear some fun colours to show what makes you, you!

R.E

Our new topic: MISSION

Each of us has a mission from God and we must find a way to complete this mission.

Realising we have an important mission and a calling from God can be a scary thought because it is a big responsibility but God has given each of us a very special job to do and God knows that we are the right person for that mission.

Although we all have the same mission to love others there may be different ways that we live out this mission. God calls each of us for our own special role.

Your Task:

1. Complete the 'mission topic page' (word document attached below). Have a go writing a definition for each word, and answer the 'Big Question' in the box.

2. Watch this clip about God's mission for us: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGqL4TL3MzU&feature=youtu.be

Answer these questions:

Have you heard God’s call?

Will you answer God’s call when you hear it?

What change would you like to see in the world?

What could you do to change the world?

Book Talk

This is the story of a house which escapes from its suburban foundations and sets off on an epic journey. Home Sweet Home combines elements of road-trip, apocalyptic and friendship narratives in it's story of a couple houses travelling across America. Can you link it to anything you have seen or read before?

While you watch the video below, follow the comprehension questions. You will need to be pausing throughout so make sure you have the questions and times for pausing with you, this is important.

The questions are attached below today's message and the link for the video is below:

Happy New Year!

Monday 4th January 2021

Good Morning Swans!

I hope you had a lovely Christmas and New Year, and a well-earned rest. I spent lots of time relaxing, watching Christmas movies, going on walks and eating too much chocolate! I spoke to my family in Australia a lot too.

Unfortunately, we won't be seeing each other for the next couple of weeks. However, I will be keeping in touch with you every day and uploading some important work for you to complete. Please send in any work you do, I always love to see your hard work. Also, if you have any questions or want to let me know how you are getting on, you can send an email which will be forwarded on to me.

It is very important that you do as much of this work as you can; read everything very carefully and watch and listen to the videos. I know things will be a little different and sometimes trickier than normal but at times like this we need to help each other as much as possible. You will need to be patient with your parents and siblings and try to work independently when you can. Just imagine Miss Hulands is there next to you, cheering you on!

Make sure you are reading a good book each day, have a rest between each subject and make sure to smile through everything you are achieving. You are going to be great.

Stay positive!

Miss Hulands :)

  • What happens to water when it is boiled?
  • Can these changes be reversed?
  • Make sure you have permission from your adult to do this. Don’t forget to take some photographs of you investigating and email them to me. Get creative and have fun! Please see the attached sheet for more information about your research project.

Below is the build-up in the myth we have been learning about in English. Your task is to try and build tension by including the suspenseful techniques that we learnt about this week (please see the checklist on the page attached to this message) You are expected to write at least half a page of work.

Example of how to build tension using what you can hear:

The world was completely still. Nothing moved, not a leaf quivered, but over the silence brooded a ghostly calm and the whisper of his smoking breath as it rose in gasps and lingered in the frosty air.

Weekend Homework - 09.10.20

Due Date: Monday 12th October 2020

Good afternoon year 6,

Black History Month

Next week we will be celebrating Black History Month at school. We have been very interested in the history of the slave trade in Britain, and have been having lots of discussions in class. Complete the reading comprehension - 'The Transatlantic Slave Trade'. We will mark it together next week. Miss Hulands has given you a copy to take home. It can also be found attached below.

Also, remember you can participate in our Black History Month competition. Find out more in the document below!

Mental Health Awareness Day

On Thursday, Mrs Waine led an assembly based on Mental Health Day. We looked at all the ways we can look after our mental health. Mrs Waine would like children to think of different things they could do to help them feel calm and ready to learn. You could send a picture to office@stmaryangels.co.uk of your child's activities. This could be them reading, going for a walk or playing a board game.

Returning reading books

Books can be changed every Monday and must be returned on Thursday so that they can be 'quarantined' in a separate box for three days. Children's reading records should be signed daily to show they have read at home. Remember, 15-20 minutes a day can make a BIG difference to children's confidence in reading. Children can choose which book they want to read according to their reading level.

Good afternoon Year 6,

Another busy week has rushed by!

This weekend we will be giving you two tasks to complete.

1. Your first task will be to learn a poem (or part of a poem- attached to this message) in preparation for National Poetry Day on Thursday 1st October 2020, where you will perform your recitals for all the other classes to watch via Zoom. Your parents have been sent home this information and we have attached the letter to this message for your convenience. Don't forget to visit the Scholastic website and order some books for yourself, using the link recommended- http://schools.scholastic.co.uk/st-mary-of-the-angels-rc

2. Your second task is to complete a Reading Comprehension attached to this message all about Tutankhamun- the fascinating 'boy King'. It has been differentiated three ways, so either choose your level of difficulty- mild, spicy or hot. Make sure to read each question twice and spend at least 30 minutes completing the activity. The answers are attached to the document so you can self-mark or mark with your parent or carer. Remember: if you find it tricky, speak to Miss Hulands about it on Monday :)

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Hulands

Science Homework - 18.09.20

Due Date: Monday 21st September 2020

The Peppered Moth

Our Science unit of study this term is ‘Evolution and inheritance.’ The evolution of the peppered moth has been studied in detail over the last 150 years. At first, almost all of the moths were light coloured, however overtime the population of moths became darker in colouring.

We want you to investigate why these changes happened. Please use the questions on the sheet below to guide you in your research.

You can present your information as an information leaflet, a word document or complete it in your homework book. You will need to use the internet to help you find the information. You may want to add some pictures to your work. Please try and complete your work independently. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to bring your work in to be marked.
