STEAM WEEK

St Mary of the Angels have been celebrating STEAM week which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths. This year's British Science Week theme is 'growth'. We have found examples of growth within all subjects around us, making it an excellent starting point for a celebration of SCIENCE. Continue sending in your posters based on this theme for our school competition. Your poster could explore a tadpole's journey into a fully grown adult frog or a seed's growth journey into a beautiful flower. We are looking forward to seeing your ideas!

On Monday, Year 5 and 6 got to visit the Goethe Institut to perform the famous Beatles song Yeah, Yeah, Yeah. We learnt the numbers, folk songs and the lyrics to Yeah Yeah Yeah, all in German. Everyone sang so beautifully and relished the opportunity. After speaking to the staff members of the Goethe Institut, they were extremely impressed with how quick the children picked up the language and theie beautiful singing.

The children have also started farming businesses as a STEM project. The children worked extremely well in their groups creating and presenting their logos, slogans and products to promote healthy eating across schools. Swans had the opportunity to do some planting of vegetables for their farming project whilst understanding the science behind it. They have been using a range of skills, including market research, maths, engineering and, design and technology to make their business ideas come to life which will be continued over the next week. Well done Swans, great work!

There will be more photos to follow.

World Book Day 2022

St. Mary of the Angels celebrated World Book Day on Thursday 3rd March. It was a spectacular day full of fun activities and most importantly - lots of READING!

Classes participated in activities such as book tastings, virtual storytelling, author presentations, visits to Paddington Children's Library, mystery storyteller 'drop-ins' to the classroom and our famous book costume parade to end the day.

This annual event is an important day in our school calendar as it promotes and encourages a love for books and reading for pleasure. We model and teach reading every day with our students, and this special celebration certainly showed us how much the children of St. Mary of the Angels love to read.

Thank you to parents and carers for your support, not only in helping to create amazing costumes, but also for encouraging and participating in home reading each day with your child. Reading is the foundation of learning and we certainly value this at our school.

Author Visit

As part of our celebration of reading in the run up to World Book Day, we welcomed Renata Kaminska, author of 'Hector - A Dog's Story' to our school on Wednesday 23rd February. The novel is an amazing story of a dog named Hector who, like every one of us, wishes only to find happiness. He is a great example of how dogs don't just see our outside, but more importantly the inside too. Renata held a special assembly and Q+A session with Reception, KS1 and KS2. We discussed themes in the book such as feelings, friendship and searching for belonging. Renata also read an extract of her book to us, which we thoroughly enjoyed listening to! We ended the session with some artwork linked to the book.

If you would like to know more about our special guest, please visit Renata’s website: https://www.hectorandfriends.com/

Westminster Climate Change Conference

Well done to all of Year 5 and Year 6 for taking part in the ClimateEd workshop this year. Our school, St Mary of the Angels, was the first school in Westminster to take part. We had visitors from the council join us to see what the children had learnt. They were all inspired by their curiosity and enthusiasm towards their learning. After this opportunity, Westminster Council has now decided to roll this out to more schools across the borough. They thanked St Mary of the Angels for being the first school to take part and said the children's contributions during the sessions has allowed this to be possible. Westminster Council also selected six pupils to represent St Mary of the Angels in a Westminster climate change conference, which took place on Monday 31st January 2022. Jaidyn, Jordan, Erica, Meron, Vera and JJ shared what they had learned during the workshop to over 100 people on a conference call. They also asked challenging questions for the panel to answer. The panel were extremely impressed with the level of questioning which really got them thinking. St Mary of the Angels are very proud!

Paddington Children's Library

On Thursday 20th January, the Swans class visited the Paddington Children's Library. We absolutely LOVED having the opportunity to browse and read such a wide variety of books. After listening to the librarian explain where the different genres were, we were allowed to borrow 2 books each. We spent time reading our books, before Miss Hulands read us a story - The Oldest Student: How Mary Walker Learned to Read. It was an excellent true story, and linked well to our current Science, Writing and History topics.

Read below for a synopsis:

Imagine learning to read at the age of 116! This is the true story of Mary Walker, the nation's oldest student, who did just that.

In 1848, Mary Walker was born into slavery. At age 15, she was freed, and by age 20, she was married and had her first child. By age 68, she had worked numerous jobs, including cooking, cleaning, babysitting, and selling sandwiches to raise money for her church. At 114, she was the last remaining member of her family. And at 116, she learned to read. This is the inspirational story of Mary Walker, a woman whose long life spanned from the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement, and who--with perseverance and dedication--proved that you're never too old to learn.

We can't wait to go back to the library on Thursday 3rd March!

Growing Together

For our current topic, we have been basing our work on The Promise, you can listen to the story/watch the short film here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ea7W4EfhZGk

We have been creating a non-fiction text (leaflets) based on green spaces and the impact they have. Look out for some examples from us by the end of the week.

Also we have been taking part in a weekly workshop from ClimateEd that links to our topic. This is all about the impact of climate change and what we can do to help. Check out photos of us along with Swans getting involved in some fantastic discussions.
