Autumn Term 1

Wow! What a fabulous 8 weeks. The children have settled well into year 1 and we are now in a solid routine with their work as well as  behaviour and learning expectations.

In Literacy that have written a 'How to guide' on being an astronaut heading to space, in maths they have been adding and subtracting one digits numbers, in history they have been looking at the history of themselves and how their lives compare to others of the past, in RE they have sequenced and explored the Creation story and what it means to belong to this wonderful world and school and in science they have been learning about the human body.

I think it is safe to say that they have worked incredibly hard this term and I am extremely proud of the progress each child has made so far.

Moving on to next term we want to ensure that we keep up our current momentum of reading everyday (singing reading records to confirm), practicing spellings regularly and completing weekly homework.  Reading for a minimum of 10 minutes every day with your child means they are exposed to the skills that will help develop and strengthen their reading and writing ability.  If there are any difficulties or concerns with any of the home learning please do not hesitate to catch me and the gate at dismissal and have a chat with me.

Have a wonderful half term and look forward to seeing the children when we return on Monday 4th October 2024.

National Poetry Day 2024

This term we celebrated National Poetry Day on Thursday 3rd October.

The theme this year was 'counting'. Kingfishers and Goldfinches were inspired by a poem called 'your voice counts' and decided to write our own Key Stage 1 poem about what we think counts. We then presented our poem to the whole school and it was well recieved which made the children in both classes feel very proud.  I will include our group poem below for you to read and enjoy.

The children also went on to write their own personal poems which read out to their friends.

Forest School

This term Goldfinches had their first visit of the year to Forest School.  We foraged for Autumn leaves and matched them to the tree they had fallen from. We also used some of the leaves we found and did some leaf printing. We had lots and lots of fun and are looking forward to our next visit.

Black History Month

This year Key Stage One researched and learned about the extrodinary woman Mae Mae Jemison. Mae Jemison was the first Black woman in space. Mae Jemison didn’t like that there were no women astronauts. When she heard the famous ‘I Have a Dream’ speech
by Martin Luther King Jr., this pushed her to believe in her dream of being an astronaut. Mae Jemison also has a medical degree. She then worked as a doctor looking after volunteers working in African countries. The children really enjoyed learning about this extrodinary woman and her example how through hard work, dedication and determination you can achieve your dreams.
