Primary Curriculum

Since September 2013, the staff team have been working in partnership with Elaine Sutton, from ‘Dimensions Curriculum Design’ to develop a creative primary curriculum model for the children of St. Mary of the Angels which incorporates innovative approaches to teaching and learning with rigour and high expectations.

A Creative Curriculum

We believe that together, we have developed a creative curriculum which is truly fit for purpose and closely linked to the Primary National Curriculum 2014.

Our 'DImesnions' curriculum covers English, Science, History, Geography, Music, Dance, Art, Drama, PSHE and DT through a thematic approach to learning, with applied maths linked in when appropriate. This means our pupils are inspired, motivated and challenged by more meaningful and linked learning. It also allows us freedom and ownership with regard to how we teach as well as guaranteeing we fulfil statutory requirements in terms of coverage. Subjects taught discretely are RE, Maths, PE, Italian and more technical aspects of the English Programme of Study.

Partnership with Parents

Teachers will be sending home curriculum newsletters each term which will give you an overview of the themes being studied and curriculum  links with English and Mathematics which will continue to be taught discretely. We continue to follow the ‘Come and See’ scheme for Religious Education.

During our 'Welcome Meetings' in September, your child's class teacher and Key Stage Leader will provide you with more information about the new curriculum and how you can continue to support your child in their learning at home and at school.

Curriculum Overviews: Two Year Cycle

Having successfully trialled some of the themed units in the summer term of 2014, the staff team are confident that the themes and activities will inspire our pupils and continue to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding and their love of learning.

The links below provide curriulum overviews for Key Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2), Lower Key Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4) and Upper Key Stage 2 (Years 5 & 6). This academic year (2015/16) we are following Cycle B.
